What To Expect After Your Breast Augmentation
Discomfort
Discomfort is mild to moderate following implant placement over the muscle, and moderate to severe following implant placement under the muscle. Anticipate 2-5 days of pain medication if your implants are over the muscle and 3-7 days of pain medication if your implants are under the muscle.
Swelling
Swelling peaks around 3-5 days after surgery. During this time, your breasts might feel as though your breast milk has “come in” following pregnancy. Swelling is typically greater following subpectoral implant placement than subglandular. Within 10-14 days of surgery, 50-75% of your swelling will resolve. 75-90% of your swelling will be resolved within a month, and the remainder will resolve over the next month or two. Swelling may be worse if you are athletic or if you resume heavy exercise. Bruising often does not occur, but if it does, it may last 5–10 days.
Stitches
Most plastic surgeons use absorbable stitches that are buried under the skin and never require removal. If your surgeon uses non-absorbable stitches, they will be visible outside the skin and will be removed in 5–7 days.
Bras
You will wear a sports bra or Ace wrap for 1–4 weeks. Avoid an underwire bra until your surgeon approves it.
Return to Work
You may return to work in 3–7 days if the implants were placed over your muscle, and 5–10 days if the implants were placed under your muscle. If your job requires heavy lifting, wait 2–4 weeks, and obtain your surgeon’s approval.
Exercise
Exercise may be resumed in about 4 weeks. Some plastic surgeons allow exercise sooner but this may increase the risk of hematoma.
Final Result
Your final result will be seen within 1-4 months depending on swelling.
